H.M.S. Glorious was a Courageous class aircraft carrier of the Royal Navy . During June 1940 ,Glorious was taking part in Operation Alphabet ,  the evacuation from Norway . On 8 June 1940 Glorious with Ardent and Acasta detached from Vice Admiral Lionel Wells' carrier squadron to head home. At around 1540 hrs Glorious was seen by the Scharnhorst , and Gneisenau . Scharnhorst opened fire on Glorious hitting the hangar deck preventing any aircraft to be launched . After a fight lasting about two hours all three ships were sunk . Scharnhorst and Gneisenau did not pick up any survivors , and the German authorities failed to mention the sinking until the next day. Three days later Norwegian fishing boats rescued 40 men from lifeboats . The total losses were 1,519 sailors and marines from the three ships .
